Historically, community service and giving back has been a part of the Scott Oil Co. mindset. The company was built over the years strictly by word of mouth advertising and through community involvement by Ed and Marian Scott. Working as a team in the business for 40 years, they also worked as a team to divide up their various volunteer efforts.

Ed Scott was deeply involved with Lions Clubs International on both a local and district level. This included the many years he served as eye research fund chairman for District 33-N in which he annually raised approximately $250,000 for eye research.

Additionally, he maintained long-term membership and board affiliation with the Better Home Heat Council of Massachusetts, New England Fuel Institute and National Oil Jobbers Council.

Locally, he maintained an active role in the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce being named the Manchester Small Business Person of the Year, served on the Board of Directors and served as president of the organization as well.

Marian also did her share of community work as well. She was an active member of the Manchester Booster's Club and served as its president, was a member of the Women's Club and was a longtime member and treasurer of the Manchester Historical Society.

As the business evolved with the next generation of the family becoming active on a full time basis so did their volunteer affiliations.

Bill Scott has been an active member of a variety of organizations benefiting local communities and young people for more than twenty years.

In Manchester, he has served on a variety of local boards and committees including the Save The Steeple Committee, the Growth Study Committee, the Athletic Fields Committee and the 4th of July Parade Committee for many years.

He has also spent many years being involved with a variety of youth sports programs while his two sons were growing up. His involvement was on both a coaching and board involvement level for Manchester-Essex Little League Baseball, Cape Ann Youth Football and Agawam Hockey.

Bill has been a member of the Manchester Club, served as its president and is now serving as the club treasurer on an ongoing basis and organizing the clubs annual scholarship raffle.

Along with these other volunteer efforts, Bill has carried on the family tradition of active participation in the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce by being named its Small Business Person of the Year, chairing the Manchester Division, serving on the board of directors and working up to be president of the organization.

At the same time, the company has continued to keep involved in industry associations as well by maintaining membership and board affiliation with the Massachusetts Oilheat Council, New England Fuel Institute and National Oilheat Research Alliance.

For many years there was no marketing budget at Scott Oil Co. Not one dollar was spent on direct advertising or marketing of any type. The company policy starting back in 1946 and to a large extent to this day is to put money back into the communities that support the organization.

Scott Oil Co. does have a marketing budget today but we have never lost sight of our roots and what has made the company into what it is today.

One way that we felt we could directly help the fundraising efforts of every worthwhile organization was by sponsoring free advertising space for their fund raising efforts. This concept started out modestly enough with our offer of free space in the Manchester Cricket. The idea was such a great success we now offer free advertising space to any civic organization in the Beverly Citizen, Ipswich Chronicle, Hamilton-Wenham Chronicle and Danvers Herald as well.

We often gets notes of appreciation from groups who utilize the add space. As one person said, "I would like to extend to you our most sincere appreciation for the use of your advertising space in the Ipswich Chronicle. Our bazaar was a success and your message allowed us to reach many more people than otherwise possible."
